Degehamedo (woreda)

Degehamedo (Somali: Dhagaxmeedo) is one of the 47 woredas in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Degehabur Zone, Degehamedo is bordered on the south and southwest by the Fiq Zone, on the northwest by the Oromia Region, on the northeast by the Jijiga Zone, and on the east by Degehabur. The major town in Degehamedo is Degehamedo.

The only perennial river in Degehamedo is the Fafen.

Demographics

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 44,185, of whom 18,792 were males and 25,393 were females; 2,102 or 4.76% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 22.3%. Information is not available on the area of Degehamedo, so its population density cannot be calculated.[1] This woreda is primarily inhabited by the Darod clan of the Somali people.

The 1994 national census reported a total population for this woreda of 35,977, of whom 21,047 were men and 14,930 were women; 1,409 or 3.92% were urban inhabitants. The largest ethnic group reported in Degehamedo was the Somali people (99.98%).[2]
